The Ragdoll was developed in the 1960s in California by Ann Baker, selecting cats with striking blue eyes, semi-long coats, and famously relaxed, people-loving temperaments. Their tendency to relax when held inspired the name “Ragdoll.”
Growth and recognition: Through the 1970s–1990s, dedicated breeders refined the breed’s look and temperament. Today, Ragdolls are recognised by major registries and are among the world’s most popular pedigreed cats.
Temperament: Gentle, affectionate companions who follow you from room to room, greet at the door, and often enjoy being held. Calm yet playful; wonderful with respectful children and other pets.
Size: Large, slow-maturing breed. Males often 6.5–9+ kg; females 4.5–7 kg. Full maturity around 3–4 years.
Coat: Silky, semi-long, low-matting texture with less undercoat than many longhairs; moderate shedding.
Colours/patterns: Seal Mitted, Blue Point
Activity: Moderate energy; enjoy interactive play and puzzle feeders; typically prefer mid-height perches over extreme climbing.
Voice: Usually soft-spoken; communicate with gentle meows, chirps, and trills.
Grooming: Weekly combing with a stainless-steel comb; more during seasonal sheds. Nail trims every 2–3 weeks. Baths rarely needed with regular grooming.
Lifespan: Commonly 12–16+ years with good care.
